We Have a Winner!

Rachel, our friend from across the pond nailed it! The feathers do indeed belong to a Northern flicker– how in the world did you figure that out, Rachel?!

I got online and looked and looked, and finally came across a website that helped identify all kinds of feathers. The Northern flicker is a member of the woodpecker family, and at first glance it doesn’t appear to have any feathers that look like the ones in the picture– but then there were photos of the underside of their wings, and there it was!

Here are the photos:

The feathers–

And here’s a Northern flicker– handsome devil, isn’t he?

And here are those elusive feathers:

See?

Annnnd that’s about it for this episode of Babybloomr’s Wild Kingdom!

Did I not tell you about my encylopedic international ornothological knowledge?!

Google is a powerful tool. Obviously you need to use the correct technical terms … like ‘birds with golden tail feathers’.

I prefer what’s behind curtain number one for our Rachel myself; the Audubon™ Northern Flicker by Wild Republic®, an original realistic plush beanbag bird with authentic sounds. And this beanbag marvel just happens to be a perfect replica of the original species in the way it looks and sounds, of course = )

    “State Bird of Alabama

Also known as the Yellow-shafted Flicker and the Yellowhammer, this North American woodpecker is the state bird of Alabama. They are found in wooded and suburban areas across much of the United States, and make their nests in hollow trees, buildings or nest boxes. Flickers are often found seeking insects (especially ants) on the ground in backyards and farm fields.”

Thanks for the prayers concerning my health. Good news is that it’s not the worst case scenario possibility. Not yet anyway. But, we still have to try and figure out the best way to get me as up to speed as possible with what I am dealing with. There’s more than one school of thought on this, and one of the doctors is not the easiest to deal with. So, another prayer or two would be appreciated = )

    Peace, and thanks again !! = )
