Holidays and family and stuff

Hope everybody had a great 4th of July, the sweatiest holiday of the year and one of my personal favorites since it pretty much revolves around food. Not unlike Thanksgiving, my other favorite. Also birthday parties.

The girls and I are in Arkansas, and we had a classic southern small town celebration. First we ordered barbeque ribs and all the fixins’ from our favorite BBQ place, The Rib Crib (don’t you just love that name?) and then my sister Carolyn and her family drove over with us to a parking lot on a hill across from the local mortuary where we set up a bunch of folding chairs and settled in to watch the fireworks display exploding just over the tree line.

Doesn’t get much better than that.
My favorite line of the evening came from my 92 year-old dad, who settled into his seat, smiled and glanced over at my mom and remarked, “Well, what do you know– another fourth of July and we’re still here!”

We picked up Charlotte the Happy Camper yesterday from Brookhill Ranch and she apparently survived two weeks away from the bosom of her family just fine, and managed to have a fantastic time. She talked our ear off all the way back to Nanno’s house, regaling us with a patented stream of consciousness camp report as only our Charlotte can–lots of descriptions of activities, interspersed with funny stories, self-interrupted by great spiritual insights (!) and the occasional “Oh look! A cow!”
I just love that kid.

Here she is explaining the finer points of something or other to her Momma June:

(Picture that pose for like, the next two hours. I don’t know where she gets that. Shut up.)

Today she woke up with a temperature of 102. I’m not kidding. I guess she picked up a virus or something at camp– she did mention something about one of her counselors hurling…
That must be it. If talking too much can give you a fever, I would have been dead years ago.

There’s nothing like having your little chicks back in the nest…..the nest being close to the bossom of the mother hen regardless of their location. Ever notice how no matter how much the wandering little one talks or how ridulous she sounds…it is all brilliant in every sense of the word? That verbal picture of three generations sitting, watching fireworks…it’s right out of a Norman Rock(mind went blank) painting. I like the feeling we get on the Fourth of July, our pride in being blessed to be Americans. Well, shucks, what’s more American than ribs from the crib? Love you guys!

Glad you had a great 4th of July and what better way to spend it than with your family. I loved your favorite saying of the day – isn’t it just extra special to have yet another holiday with your paretns. Does not get much better than that. Glad you were able to be there and to enjoy it with them.

Glad Charlotte had a great time at camp but we all knew she would.

We had some BBQ ribs for the 4th also along with a lot of other great food. Good food, fun with friends and a great 4th! I love to watch the fireworks, that is something that never gets old and you just sit there and ooh and awe no matter how old you get.

It is great to celebrate how blessed we are as Americans.

Glad to hear that Charlotte made it back okay – sorry to hear she’s got a fever….
I LOVE the quote from your Dad!! Sounds just like my Mom – except she’s only 66! LOL

    Your BBQ sounds amazing!!

Glad that you all had an incredible 4th Tori, esp. with your parents, and that Char is back home. I know she is glad she’s there – esp. if she is sick. I always hate it if I am away from home and come down with something. I’m praying Char is doing better. I’ve hurt my right eye so I am having trouble reading the screen and typing tonight. The light is hurting my eye so I’d better get off this thing.

Besides I’ve got to go and praise God for the rain that He just bestowed upon us. We needed it so bad! And we sure got it tonight – at least 5 inches

Sounds like Char should have her own blog! I’d love to hear those camp stories! And the counselor hurling! What a great two weeks! Welcome home, Char! Hope you feel better!

I’m really not into fireworks. They’re too LOUD! Sudden loud noises scare me. My parents used to take us kids (five of us) to see fireworks every Fourth of July—–until the night a “piece” of one of the fireworks hardware went up up into the air and came down on our CAR!!!

Whoops, I accidently submitted this before I was ready……or done. Is someone trying to tell me something?

Anyway, it left a big dent in the roof of my dad’s Nash coup. (I told you I am old.) Now when I go with my kids to see fireworks, I duck and cover my head every time one goes off. It embarrasses them, so I quit going a few years ago. They didn’t miss me. I wonder why. I am relieved. If I wanted sudden loud noises, with accompanying bright lights, I’d go to Iraq. But I’m glad you and your family enjoyed the fireworks, Tori. And all you other gals too. I stayed at home and bowled on our Wii. Got a 200. It was good.

Gracious Linda, it’s only an old woman who doesn’t enjoy fireworks. You remind me of Chicken Little, afraid the sky will fall in on you. And there Tori is making memories for Maddi (I remembered) and Char with their grandparents. My goodness, Linda, all you would have had to do is hold your bra over your head and that stuff would bounce right off. Nothing like a double whammy sling shot!

BARB!!!! What have you been smoking tonight? ROFLMBO!

Well, I AM an old woman and I don’t enjoy fireworks. Besides, I can’t see fireworks from my recliner, so it’s a bust. (No pun intended.)
