My sweet camper

Bring back any memories?

Hard beds, dusty floors, grandaddy longlegs, unnaturally perky counselors, 3 minute showers, camp food, sweatbox nights and too-early mornings? Ahhhh….

Of course there’s also swimming in the lake, crazy competitions, new best friends, singing “Get your elbows off the table”, making cool crafts, feeling independent, noticing boys, giggling uncontrollably and that deep sleep that comes from being plumb wore out.

The cowboy hat’s not hers, but the two wolves she is holding in her hands are gifts from me– she has discovered a new computer game called WolfQuest and she is obsessed with all things wolf-y. She also has her ‘blanket’ tucked safely into her pillowcase.

Sometimes just knowing that my growing, gangly, funny, quietly self-assured, big-hearted Charlotte will survive two weeks away from us beautifully, but still sleeps with her blanket at night is enough to make my mother’s heart ache from the sheer sweetness of it all.

I’m so glad my 40 year old body was able to produce one more kid. I wouldn’t have missed Charlotte for the world.

We are glad, too. We wouldn’t have wanted to miss her either.
Does she realize yet how gorgeous all that thick hair is?
This does bring back memories. I never had Christmas lights around my bunk, though.I do remember one night at Camp Ney-A-Ti on Guntersville Lake, along about 1978 or 1979, our cabin was so hot we decided to sleep outside on the shuffleboard court. I woke up when some bug-like creature entered my nasal passages and made it’s way to my brain. I was jumping around, blowing and banging myself in the face trying to dislodge it.Never did get it out.
Aren’t you glad I shared that image with all of you ?

Awwwww, Charlotte looks so cute on that top bunk. For the next two weeks, she’ll be making memories that will be tucked away in her childhood remembrances. Funny how you can have two children, born to the same parents, raised in the same house, loved exactly the same, and enjoyed exactly the same…..but they can be two totally different little people. And, isn’t that wonderfully fun!

That picture is just precious, esp. since she is holding the gifts you gave her. (My best friend is crazy for wolf material too. She collects practically anything with a wolf on it.) I never had the privalage of attending summer camp but I didn’t need to – I lived on a farm that was practically a camp. ROTFL We had everything you just described including snakes, chickens, horses, and ticks. LOL The only thing I didn’t have was the friends unless they were invited over. Charlotte will truly enjoy her time there I know and she’ll be back home with you before you know it. ;) Hang in there.

She looks all set and ready for the two weeks which I guess by now is down to one left. I bet she has had a blast and will have all kinds of stories to tell once you go pick her up. Can’t wait for the updates.
