Reaching out
I am writing this from Arkansas. My niece Sarah, an elementary school teacher, engaged to be married, and one of the sweetest people God ever blew breath into was just diagnosed with a brain tumor, and we need your prayers.
Sarah has been suffering from several different puzzling symptoms for a while now– ear problems, neck problems, horrific migraines– and in the middle of yet another headache two days ago at her home, she suddenly lost consciousness. Her fiance Tom had trouble rousing her and her breathing become very slow, so he called an ambulance and she was taken to the emergency room, where she briefly passed out again. They suspected she was having a reaction to a new medication she had been given for her headaches, and when I first called and talked to my sister Liz at the emergency room she sounded very relieved– Sarah was conscious, alert and talking, all vital signs checking out fine. Liz mentioned that they were going to go ahead and do a CT-scan as a precaution and she might have to spend the night for observation, but thankfully things were looking much better. The next call I received was from my other sister Carolyn, who said that she had just talked to Liz again and the CT-scan had indicated some ‘abnormalities.’ Carolyn and her husband David immediately drove to the hospital to be with Liz– my brother Jonathan was already there.
The next couple of hours were surreal. The doctors ordered an MRI, and when they got the results they called in a neurosurgeon at 11:00 at night for a consultation. Liz and John were told that there was a tumor behind her ear, in the lining of her brain. The neurosurgeon said there is a good chance it is benign, but it is quite large and will require an 8 to 10 hour operation to remove it. * Updated: Doctors now say there will be a team of three surgeons and the operation will be 12-13 hours.* They are scheduling the surgery for the first of next week, Sarah is still in ICU but may be moved to a regular room today.
Russ is at home with Charlotte, Madi and I drove here yesterday, arriving last night. I haven’t seen Liz or Sarah yet, that will come later today.
I know that you guys are a praying kind of crowd , so I am asking you to please remember Sarah, and all of the worried people who love her. Sarah and her fiance Tom were leaving on Sunday for her first-ever cruise, where they were going to be married on the beach in Jamaica. Here’s what she posted on her Facebook page yesterday:
This is our Sarah.
(Will keep you updated.)
